Welcome to EMERALD CITY! Tarsem Singh’s new TV series debuts January 6th on NBC
"NBC's new show Emerald City follows Dorothy Gale, a young girl from Kansas, as she experiences the Land of Oz in a way you've never seen it before."The series stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Adria Arjona, Joely Richardson and more, premiering January 6th, 2017 (with a 2-hour first episode), at 9/8c on NBC.
The story of "The Wizard of Oz" and it’s characters have been done numerous times before, both in film and television, so there are some much “twists” and “new”-ness that folks can expect, and I for one am oblivious to such expectation, alas, having brought up a Chinese boy with magical tales instead of dragons and monkey gods LOL ... but of course familiarity comes with adulthood, and recognising "Dorothy" and "The Scarecrow" et al, as seen in the trailers/promos.
… But what caught my eye in this single trailer alone, were amazing visuals and design, which made so much sense once I found out who the director of the series was; Tarsem Singh!
And while I’d heartily discount “Mirror, Mirror” from the list, Tarsem’s previous features “The Cell”, and “Fallen” were instrumental in my continued admiration for film design, where I even evoke in my film classes! (*Maybe not The Cell, as it might be a tad too “mature”, but still…!). Witness this single image:
So even if the fear of “visuals over content” materialises, I sure as heck still expect a purdy picture, no?
Check out some select … nay, a whole lot of screen grabs - from the main trailer (featured up top)!
