"Unpretty Rapstar 2" - South Korean Reality Music Competition Show

WHAT-IS: "Unpretty Rapstar (Hangul: 언프리티 랩스타) is a 2015 South Korean music competition program focusing on female rappers. The show, a spin-off of Show Me the Money, premiered in January 2015 on Mnet and was hosted by Korean rapper San E. In August 2015, it was confirmed that the show would begin airing its second season on September 11, 2015." (Wiki)

My sister had clued me in on this show this fine Saturday afternoon, and I was intrigued with the idea of "Lady Rappers" (as opposed to the all-male rap reality show "Show Me the Money"), not just because it featured pretty Korean girls, but I was also interested to see the rap culture as embraced by female artists/performers - with this being an interesting mix of established rappers and "trainee" artistes too - hopefully beyond the cliches of "appropriated culture", IMHO.

And with watching a single episode, there were a decent amount of girl-drama and "betrayal", "self-sacrifice" deemed as unprofessional, all from the frowns of pretty girls. I could imagine a room full of dude-guys and jocks-wif-attitudes, but "girl rappers"? Dude, you;d just shut the hell up and sit back and watch! LOL

I watched the first episode from Season 2 where the girls were filming the season's opening song "Don't Stop" (seen in video featured above). The season has since ended in November 2015, and the winners have already been announced to be … SPOILERS BELOW:

"The show’s second season was highly anticipated after the success of the first, but the new season was not without its controversies. Even before the broadcast, it was revealed that 4Minute’s Jiyoon would be participating halfway through the show. Many people wondered if it was necessary to have yet another idol rapper on the show (joining Wonder Girls’ Yubin, FIESTAR’s Yezi, and Sistar’s Hyorin).

Further along in the show, Rubber Soul’s Kim and EXY also joined the show, raising complaints that they were added when the season was almost complete. Other issues include the revelation that Ash-B, Heize, Kasper, and Truedy had signed to continue with Mnet after the show and the “malicious editing” scandal."
